Description

George Morris Philips, who was Principal of the West Chester State Normal School from 1881 - 1920, was born in 1851 at Atglen, Chester County. In 1873 he joined the faculty of the West Chester State Normal School and taught mathematics until he resigned in 1878 to teach at Lewisburg University (Bucknell). While on the faculty at West Chester he married another faculty member, Elizabeth M. Pyle, who taught instrumental music. In 1881 he returned to West Chester as Principal of the Normal School and held that office until his death in 1920. This photograph shows Dr.. Philips seated at his desk in Green Gables, the Principal's Residence, which stood on the site of the Philips Memorial Building.
